Josef Loskot was born on 26 November 1881 in Nosislav, Austria (in what is now the Czech Republic) to Joseph and Frances Loskot.

In late 1910 or early 1911, Josef immigrated to Canada from Austria. He was employed in Regina, Saskatchewan, as a bricklayer on the Legislative Building. His wife Marie Koditek came to Canada in 1911 to join Josef and she brought her daughters Rose, Stephanie and Anne with her.

In 1913, Josef moved the family to the Limerick district of Saskatchewan where he rented and later bought land.

Joseph's brother, John Loskot, died in battle as a Private in the Fifth Battalion of the Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) while serving in World War One. Two hundred forty soldiers and officers from the Fifth Battalion died that day (28 April 1917) under heavy German shelling that lasted nearly 24 hours, north of Arleux, France.
